Royal Theatre

The Royal Alexandra Theatre now 100 years old (1907-2007)

Frequently visited by royal and celebrity guests, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were the most recent stars to grace Toronto's historic landmark theatre during this summer's 'Toronto International Film Festival'.

The Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto was built by Cawthra Mulock.

A sophisticated young man, Cawthra Mulock wanted to put Toronto Ontario Canada on the world’s cultural map.

The son of a politician, Mulock was a stockbroker, a foundry-owner and a very rich man – he inherited nearly $3 million from a wealthy great aunt when he was a teenager.

In 1905 at age 23, Mulock formed a union with several other prominent men to build “a modern centre for the performing arts”.

The mission given assigned to the architect was to “build the finest theatre on the continent.”

The Royal Alexandra Theatre was saved from demolition in 1962 by Ed Mirvish (known as 'Honest Ed').

Honest Ed's entrepreneurial vision restored and returned golden grandeur to the historic venue.

As a result, The Royal Alexandra Theatre still stands here today 100 years after its creation.

'Honest Ed' Ed Mirvish died this year in July at age 93 just a few days before his 93rd birthday (July 24, 1914 - July 11, 2007).
