Under the cover of darkness

People out in the sticks really take for granted how lucky they are to live in an area with hardly any light pollution, while they tuck themselves in for a night of sleep most are unaware of what incredible light shows are dancing about outside.

This particular night was my first time seeing an auroral storm higher than a kp6 and I must have spent close to 3 hours at 2am driving, walking, shooting and just gazing, admiring the event above with absolutely no care about having to get up at 8am the next morning to jump on the tills for a long day of work.

This is made of from a stitch of 4 shots, 2x 150s exposures at f/2.8 and 1600 ISO for the foreground and 2x 25s exposures at the same settings for the sky (preventing star trails while freezing some of the auroral movement).

Shot on a D5100 using my Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8.
