Hersiliidae (Tree Trunk Spiders)

by Toby Mobbs - Flash Mobbs Photography

The family Hersiliidae are most easily identified by their very long spinnerets which can be nearly as long as their body, and their long thin legs. Due to these spinnerets, tree trunk spiders are also commonly known as two-tailed spiders or long-spinneret bark spiders. They are very well camouflaged on trees with their mottled bark-like appearance and can often be overlooked by humans and prey. While they do appear the size and colour of some huntsman, with equally long legs, the legs of Hersiliidae taper out to a point much like their long spinnerets.
