02 LL Blankenhorn – Development / 3rd font extension
The font development of the three Blankenhorn styles was a long journey.
In particular, extensive ligatures (up to 5 characters in a glyph - see Slide 3) had to be carefully weighed up in some cases, and sometimes also against each other.
The font configuration of the three typefaces was not mechanically adapted to each other, but each font was individually provided with its own meaningful features (see slide 4-6).
At Lineto's request, the font should be able to serve as many languages as possible, i.e. it should be provided with extensive accent expansion.
Many script typefaces, similar to Blankenhorn, claim to have extensive accent expansion. On closer inspection, however, the accents are limited to single letters only. The Blankenhorn actually has all the ligatures with accents in all the features. This could only be achieved with the help of @ondrej.job's great project Context of Diacritics (www.setuptype.com/x/cod/).
Setting up the complex features would not have been possible without Thomas Thiemich @tthiemich's help. In a dialogue with Thomas, my confused ideas could be translated into pragmatic features.
Precise information on the expansion of the LL Blankenhorn and the respective features can be found in three PDF manuals under the following link: lineto.com/typefaces/blankenhorn?font=QhKYqLSnm6#about
