Some DIY has a subversive side, but DIY also can involve a mainstream form of consumerism

As for the mainstream consumerism side of this -

it often is associated with home renovation shows (like Trading Spaces), which primarily are about redecorating

 

All of that DIY I've mentioned has a self-centred quality to it -- which also is very mainstream, in that respect. There can be autonomy that can break away from other maintream conformity and dependencies and so on, but the lack of collectivism and community is mainstream in other ways.

(But I don't mean to suggest that we should seek out some other selfless extreme, mind you.)
