Toda tribe's temple in Ooty - Toda Manda, @South India

www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS13pXTbO38 The Toda people are a small tribal community live in Nilgiri in district of Southern India. The Todas consider buffaloes as sacred. Symbol of buffalo head is sculpted out in front of all their temples as you see in this picture.

Toda temples are constructed in a circular pit lined with stones and are quite similar in appearance and construction to Toda huts.

Each hut has only a tiny entrance at the front—about 3 feet (90 cm) wide, 3 feet (90 cm) tall. The unusually small entrance serves as a means of protection from the weather as well as the sudden attack of wild animals.

The temples called paluvarsh have the same shape with slight differences. The other type, called poovarsh, are cylindrical with a long conical roof.

The Todas visit or enter their temple only when their stomach is empty and they follow this tradition through generations. Buffalo are considered to be holy by them.
