Velarde (General Courts, MAD)
In the Spanish Cortes there are two male lions but with the peculiarity that one has testicles and the other one does not.
The lions are called Daoíz (without testicles) and Velarde (with them). Both names, Daoíz and Velarde, were put in reference to the captains Luis Daoiz and Torres and Pedro Velarde, officers of artillery and heroes of the rise of 2nd May in 1808.
The fact that only Velarde is appropriately endowed was discovered only within the last few years.
The Government has decided to leave Daoíz without testicles. They do it for his good, so that he does not suffer more damages after remaining more than a century in the open air, listening to what happens through the career of San Jerónimo.
