Early Pond Egret

Spring 2016 I spotted two great egrets at Brick Pond at the same time. Such an undocumented experience that eBird balked and required proof (which I provided in a photo). So imagine my surprise when I began hearing from my friend Bill Baburchak that as many of six or more have been seen since late July. From his visits he'd found they spend quality time there in the mornings. Yesterday, during my sunrise stint in the blind, I first spotted one egret far across the water. Then two. They eventually moved closer to a log in what seems to be prime hunting real estate in the center of the pond. There they remained for the duration of my stay. During that time they were joined by at least three others. Five great egrets in early August. Migration patterns are changing. The climate is changing. If you don't believe it, ask a birder or bird photographer. Great Egret preening in the early August sunlight at Brick Pond Wetland Preserve in Owego, NY. August 10, 2019
