The red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) belongs to the sub-family Nymphalinae - known as vinterpraktfjärilar in Swedish. Now, praktfjärilar is what we call the family Nymphalidae, the brush-footed butterflies and "vinter" unsurprisingly means, you guessed it, "winter".
They have this name because they hibernate through the cold Swedish winter as adults. Perhaps this is why they, like this one ona blue globe-thistle (Echinops bannaticus) have so much thick fur?
