Leon's Diving Beetle - _TNY_2302

My mother-in-law had some visitors the other day - one of my wife's cousins and his kids. One of them, ten-year-old Leon, wasn't that excited about all the talking so him and I ended up by the garden pond instead and there we spotted this scarce lesser diving beetle (Acilius canaliculatus) on a rock in the water.

This is a fairly large beetle at 14 mm / .55" and has a really neat texture on the elytra so we spent some time examining (and obviously photographing) it.

We have seen the (even larger) larvae of this one swimming around in the pond so it was cool to see the finished product so to say.
