Pretty Bug - Horrible Nails - _TNY_1556

We're fixing up the garden and a friendly neighbour gifted us some of those concrete garden tiles covered in small stones. As I was carrying them over to my yard one by one, I noticed there was a small bug on the side of another neighbour's house which I passed each time I walked past it. So after going back and forth nineteen times with the tiles, I ducked inside for the camera and looked closer to see what it was.

It turned out to be this blue shieldbug (Zicrona caerulea), a predatory species with a really nice metallic shimmer to it so I made it climb onto my left hand and took some photos of it, including this one.

Now, when you photograph fingernails at macro magnifications, they never look particularily nice as you see a lot more details and inperfections than you thought there were, but after having carried all those dirty concrete tiles (and incidently eleven other tiles from the car just before), my nails really were in a sorry state here.

Fortunately, the shieldbug was there to offset it.

For another shot of the same insect after I had put it down on a ox-eye daisy, please have a look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/54566379307/
