Thoughts on Colour, Pt. 2 - _TNY_9484

I bet that if you ask a hundred people what colour this beetle is, most would say it is orange/red and the rest would say it is orange/red and black.

So of course, it is known as the brown chafer (Serica brunnea). And it's not just in English. The Swedish, German, Dutch and Norwegian names all refer to it as brown.

The Danes are better. They don't call it anything with red, but instead it is a "natoldenborre" where "nat" is Danish for "night" which fits well with it being a nocturnal species (hence the large eyes).

Part 1 is closer and actually another specimen photographed exactly 24 hours (down to the minute!) later here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52672551156/
