New Species for Me, Pt. 2 - _TNY_6674

Even after more than fifty visits to the Haga Ocean butterfly house - I still come across new species to photograph.

Here is a brand new white morpho (Morpho polyphemus), also known as the Polyphemus white morpho which was drying its wings while hanging from the empty chrysalis it had just crawled out of.

Now, the fact that I haven't seen one of these before isn't because I kept missing them, but rather that the species of the incoming chrysalides from the breeders vary a bit so while there are several species which are "always" there, others just appear every now and then - which makes it even more fun to come back for yet another visit!

When I saw this one hanging there, drying its wings, I initially mistook it for another white species which I have only seen once, the common mother-of-pearl (Protogoniomorpha parhassus): www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53215987139/ - but the eys on that one are white while this one had dark eyes with a cool shimmer in green and red.

Another really cool thing about this one is how much the wings look like they are made from cloth, right?

Two other morpho species found at this place are among the really common ones, the Peleides blue morpho: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52042598269/ and the blue-banded morpho: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51983908732/

Since posting Pt. 1 of this one, I have actually spotted another morpho, the Amathonte blue morpho (Morpho amathonte) which looks like this: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53711993540/
