Green Saw - _TNY_8001
Sawfly are the herbivore cousins of wasps in the family Symphyta which belong to Hymenoptera - so they aren't flies at all (just like dragonflies, butterflies stoneflies, damselflies and so on aren't). And when I say herbivore, I mean the larvae as adult wasps feed on nectar as well - they just hunt insects to feed their larvae.
The reason for the name is that the females have an ovipositor which looks like a little saw and they use this to "saw" into plants and lay the eggs inside them where they are safer until they hatch.
This one from my mother-in-law's garden outside Härnösand, Sweden, belong to the genus Tenthredo but I can't figure out which exact species out of the 38 in the genus which can be found in Sweden this is.
