Cool Scales - _TNY_9333

If you zoom in on the face on this small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) you can see some cool-looking scales behind the eye. For some reason, I had never noticed those on any previous tortoiseshell.

 

The flower is oregano (Origanum vulgare) - the same one you put on your pizza.
