String Instrument - _TNY_7692
A balalaika is a Russian stringed instrumen with a characteristic triangular body. This spider lacks a common English name but the Swedish one is "skogsbalalajkaspindel" (Episinus angulatus), meaning forest balalaika spider and looking at it, I think it is a very fitting and clever name - given to the species by Swedish arachnologist Lars Jonsson.
This isn't a particularily large species with a body length of around 5 mm / .2", but I spotted this particular one on my bedroom wall and once I had carried it outside and placed it on an ivy leaf, I of course took some photos of it. This one is at 2.7:1 magnification.
Apparently, they make H-shaped webs which sounds intriguing.
