Overwinterer - _TNY_7322

I originally tried to sneak up on this red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) when it was sitting with the wings opened on the gravel road, but since I had the MP-E65mm lens on the camera when I saw it, it flew off before I got close enough. Next it landed at about eye-level on a very lage rock and this somehow meant that I was less scary and could take three shots of it at 1.2:1 magnification.

This is a species which hibernates through the Swedish winter as adult (where the mottled brown underside comes in handy) so they can be out and about fairly early in the season.

Looking through my shots, this one appears to be a bit difficult for me to photograph the dorsal side of the wings, but here is one at least: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52093918033/
