Blue Pearls - _TNY_6840
The Sigma 180mm f/3.5 APO Macro EX DG HSM lens has a maximum magnification level of 1:1 - ie it can do true macro. This is achieved 46 cm /18" from the focal plane - but since the lens in itself is so long, this equals about 20 cm / 8" from the front glass.
But there is a twist as this lens accepts teleconverters so with a Sigma EX 2x APO DG teleconverter between the camera and the lens, the magnification doubles to 2:1 - at the same focusing distance!
The butterfly I have gotten close to here is a banded blue morpho (Morpho achilles), sometimes called the blue-banded morpho, and is named that way because of the colouration on the dorsal side of the wings - but in this shot, the blue centerpiece of attention must be those eyes, right?
For a shot of what the dorsal side of the wings look like, have a look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51983908732/
