Killing March in May, Pt. 2 - _TNY_7179
Now that we finally got some warmer weather up here, I was out in front of the house with the camera to see if anybody had woken up.
After talking a bit to my newest neighbour and his adorable little son, I unsuccessfully chased a couple of mason bees around before spotting this successful little hunter on the leaves of the elephant-eared saxifrage (Bergenia sp.)
The species is the most common jumper around my house - a zebra spider (Salticus scenicus) and the catch it was enjoying is some sort of march fly in the Bibio genus.
Unfortunately, my little photosession was cut short by a nosy black ant who tried to have a closer look at the spider here and subsequently scared it so the spider quickly teleported away somewhere within the saxifrage leaves.
This is shot at 1:1 magnification, but part 1 was at 2.4:1 and can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53715870113/
