When I took this shot of a male Lathbury's nomad bee (Nomada lathburiana) which was munching on pollen on the sallow, I didn't realise how unsafe my position was.
You see, this was at one of the slowers at the very top and I was standing in the *very* steep little slope next to where the sallow grew so if I had slipped, the result would at best have been a very muddy me and at worst, some mangled camera equipment.
When I had these spotted red eyes in the viewfinder, I however forgot everything about such things and just wanted the shot, but in hindsight, perhaps it would have been smarter to play it a bit more safe.
Nomad bees are parasites, much in the same way as the cuckoo does and this species specialises in nests of the, in my opinion gorgeous, ashy mining bee (Andrena cineraria) which looks like this: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/36656820986/
