Lots of Eyes, Pt. 2 - _TNY_0269

This handsome fellow is a male pellucid fly (Volucella pellucens).

The lovely pink flower he has landed on is a great masterwort (Astrantia major), one of my summer favourites - both because it is quite photogenique, but also because the insects seem to love it and stay on them a little extra even though I stick my lens in their faces like this.

The way to tell this is a male hoverfly is by looking at the eyes. Compare his (which are touching each other) to the ones of this female which are distinctly separated: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53215596311/
