Giant Among the Bamboo - _TNY_6821
I'm quite pleased with this shot of a male atlas moth (Attacus atlas) waiting for night to fall at the Haga Ocean butterfly house.
This is a nocturnal species so during the night, they stay still and asleep which means you don't see them move very much and I see most of them staying on their coccoon in the chrysalis cabinet which makes for a more boring background than when they have moved away from it like this one.
Looking at the white markings on the wings, we can see the small white "extra" ones above the upper triangles. This tells us it is a "true" atlas moth (Attacus atlas) and not one of the closely related species like the Philippine Attacus moth (Attacus lorquinii) which lacks the extra markings, as seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53638436549/
