Orange-Banded - _TNY_6664
If I tell you that this butterfly resting on the inside of the acrylic door of the chrysalis cabinet at the Haga Ocean butterfly house is a male orange-banded shoemaker (Catonephele orites) - you can obviously see where the name comes from.
But for me, when I only found the female and she looked like this: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53462466647/ - the name made a whole lot less sense.
This species is also known as the banded Grecian shoemaker, but so far I haven't been able to figure out where the "shoemaker" part of the names comes from. Do tell if you know.
"My" butterfly house here is located in Solna on the north side of Stockholm (while I live on the south side) and they have actually had another Catonephele species which look quite similar - the blue-frosted banner (Catonephele numilia): www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52801790504/
