Major Eye Contact - _TNY_4031

This pair of very round and very green eyes belong to a silver-washed fritillary (Argynnis paphia) I found on a thistle in Tyresta National Park.

This species has two German names (quite a lot of bugs have two names there for some reason): Kaisermantel and Silberstrich. Silberstrich is related to the English name where "Silber" is silver (duh) and "strich" means stroke - as in a pen stroke. Kaisermantel o the other hand ignores the silver colour. "Kaiser" is emperor (think of it as related to Caesar) and "mantel" is the German (and incidently Swedish) word for cloak (or mantle I suppose).
