The Royal Exception, Pt. 2 - _TNY_6497
When talking to people about the Haga Ocean butterfly house, in Solna, Sweden. more than a few them are surprised that there are no Swedish butterflies there - only tropical species. Obviously the preferred climates are quite different for our local species and also, the life cycle of Swedish species have to take the long cold winter into account which tropical species don't.
But yesterday I realized that this isn't 100% correct. While the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) in the photo here isn't a regular species at our latitudes - Stockholm is about as far north as southern Alaska, they have nevertheless been seen within our borders on a couple of occasions - though most of them are most likely escapees from other butterfly houses.
