Stage Four - _TNY_4609
A fouth instar caterpillar of the common yellow swallowtail (Papilio machaon), also known as the old world swallowtail on the leaf of my mother-in-law's purple angelica (Angelica gigas).
The shriveled little gray something in the foreground is part of the old skin this one or one of its brothers or sisters used to wear when they were crawling around as a 3rd instar caterpillar (and then instead looking like this: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53194027556/)
