Plush Toy 2 - It's a Guy! - _TNY_3034
While smaller than an atlas moth, the Lebeau's rotschildia or Lebeau's silk moth (Rothschildia lebeau) is still a very large - and very furry! - moth.
This male was resting next to the coccoon he had previously crawled out of which was very fortunate as I hade previously photographed a female in pretty much the exact same position which makes a comparison very easy. The shot of her can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52404352726/
The principal differences are that she has a bit rounder booty (to fit eggs) and that he has bigger antennae (which are used for locating females during the night).
In Spanish, this species is known as "cuatro ventanas", meaning "four windows and I am sure you understand why.
This species varies a bit in colour and I have a bunch of shots of much lighter coloured specimens, like here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51992300131/
