Overly Dramatic - _TNY_3425

The brown chafer beetle (Serica brunnea) is a bit difficult to get a good photo of.

 

They are nocturnal (hence the large eyes), but I tend to find them under the light outside my house late in the evenings and nights during later parts of the summer so that is not the tricky part.

 

Instead, it's the way they feign death when disturbed. I find them like this, looking just fine, but s I get closer, more often than not, they get scared, and "die" which makes for a significantly less attractive photo.
