My mother-in-law had a whole bunch of common yellow swallowtail caterpillars (Papilio machaon) crawling around on the purple angelica (Angelica gigas) in her garden and we watched them grow through the summer.
Here is one in the 4th instar stage (out of five) which my son has picked up and held in front of his face.
Cropped like this, there isn't much of Daniel's face in there, but I think you get a better view of the tiny eating machine this way.
