Unusual Robber, Pt. 5 - _TNY_0677

Cyrtopogon lateralis is a species of robber fly which I have only seen once before.

This one had caught a leaf hopper which I've been told is one in the Balclutha genus and given where this was found, it has to be B. rhenana or B. punctata. The hopper must have been very tasty because the fly kept coming back to the same rock with it to have lunch.

I closed in and tried to get a good shot (some successfully) and it took off, only to loop back and land on the same rock again and then we kept repeating that over and over again.

I eventually shifted lens to the Canon MP-E65mm and took a couple of more shots, but then it let go of the prey. One of those shots here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52352927398/
