Attactive Barfly, Pt. 10 - _TNY_3819

My son (aged nine at the time) and I were shooting pool in the morning at the beach bar at Mercury Phu Quoc Resort & Villas in Phu Quoc, Vietnam, when this banded swallowtail (Papilio demolion - not to be confused with P. demoleus) suddenly appeared on the floor next to the pool table.

We're thinking he got stuck overnight inside the glass doors of the bar and was pretty exhausted when we found him as he let me get close in with the camera.

I came across a cool little tidbit of information about this species: Unlike other Papilio species, P. demolion lays its eggs in a long string and when the larvae hatch they don't start by devouring the entire eggshell like with most other members of this family. Instead it only eats part which keeps the string from breaking up. Imagine the evolution process behind that.

I made an album with all the shots I got of it (13 at the time of posting this) here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/albums/72157713009622193
