Red and Cross - _TNY_0732

A nice-looking female European garden spider (Araneus diadematus) - a species with many English names. Depending on where you are, this can also be called cross spider, diadem spider, crowned orbweaver and cross orbweaver (and probably combinations of those).

This is a very widespread species, being found in Europe, Middle East, Turkey, Caucasus, Russia (Europe to Far East), Iran, Central Asia, China and Japan. It has also been introduced in North America and can be found from southern Canada down to Mexico, as far south as Mexico City - and also from British Columbia all the way to Newfoundland.

There is a persistent rumour here in Sweden that this is the most venomous spider in the country - and also that it is the only spider in Sweden that can bite a human. Neither is of course true and a bite from this one (which basically only happen in self-defense) is about as scary as a mosquito sting.
