Green Portrait - _TNY_4725

This summer (ie 2023) was an excellent year for common yellow swallowtail caterpillar (Papilio machaon) photography for me with 10+ of them munching away at one of the purple angelicas (Angelica gigas) in my mother-in-law's garden outside Härnösand, Sweden.

Obviously, this means I have plenty of caterpillar shots to share with you guys so here goes another one. This is a 4th instar one shot at 2.7:1 magnification and you can see the simple eyes this one has unlike the compound ones of the adult butterfly.

My wife has actually planted a couple of these angelicas in front of our house down in Stockholm so maybe maybe we could tempt a swallowtail to lay her eggs on one of those in a future season.
