The Bees Knees - _TNY_5286

A close-up on the face (and knee) of a white-tailed bumblebee (Bombus lucorum coll.). The reason there is a "coll." in the scientific name there is that there are several, quite similar species which are so difficult to distinguish that they are often just grouped together.

This particular one was trying to get out of the rain and landed on the white railing around the porch - and I'm quite pleased with the detail on the face.

In this photo, you might think that the bumblebee has a really long tounge. Well, while it is true in the sense that its tounge is quite long, it isn't showing in this photo! What looks like the tounge here is a sort of sheath and the tounge can be extended out through it even further!
