Unstoppable - _TNY_5520
Ground beetles hunt using their speed. Obviously, this can be used defensively as well - to run away from threats.
Well, my son and I came across this female garden ground beetle (Carabus hortensis) running across the path next to the water in the Mjällådalen nature reserve near Härnösand, Sweden and let me tell you, the only thing on her mind was to run.
My son herded it to the best of his abilities, but since it refused to stop for more than a tenth of a second at the time, I wasn't able to focus on it and take the shot.
As a final attempt, I let her run up my arm - something which enabled me to move both her and the camera independently and I took this while she was running. I'm honestly quite surprised how spot on the focus ended up.
I actually found another (equally pretty) ground beetle that day - a rain beetle (Carabus violaceus). A photo of it here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53111882564/
