Missed Opportunity - _TNY_5006
I carried some folded up cardboard boxes to the car to throw them away, when I noticed this little guy who was sleeping inside them. Little is perhaps not the right word as it was fairly large.
Obviously I ran for the camera, but only managed a shot or two before it flew off.
This species is known as the large yellow underwing (Noctua pronuba) and I can't help wishing I had managed a photo of it with the front wings a bit open so the orange-yellow hind wings could have shown.
In German, this species is known as the "Hausmutter" which literally means "house mother", but perhaps is better translated as mother of the family or matron. This stems from their habit of getting inside houses during the night to sleep during the day.
