Teleconverted - _TNY_3354
Despite this one not having sparkling iridescent colours, I happen to think it is a very pretty species. It's known as the Dirce beauty (Colobura dirce) and sometimes as the mosaic or even zebra mosaic.
This is a good example of the level of magnification the Sigma 2x Teleconverter offers when used on the Sigma 180mm Macro lens. It turns it into a 360 mm lens - but the minimum focusing distance is still the same so instead you get twice the magnification - 2:1! This shot probably isn't at maximum magnification, but fairly close and if you zoom in, you can see the individual facets on the compound eyes which is always a treat in butterfly shots.
For "the same" shot, but taken without the teleconverter, please have a look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52943459660/, showing the entire butterfly and where I also talk about the reason why this species likes to sit with its head down like this.
