Wet Peacock - TNY_20230522_142111

The emerald peacock (Papillio palinurus), also known as the green-banded peacock (Papilio palinurus) is an absolutely spectacularily green butterfly which I have had the good fortune of photographing a couple of times at the Haga Ocean butterfly house.

This particular one had fallen into the moat underneath the chysalides cabinet (which is there to keep pesky ants out).

Since it (obviously) was very wet, it couldn't fly properly so I let it climb up on my finger and put it on a thin tree trunk to dry off - and with the intention of taking a photo or two of it.

Unfortunately for me, it didn't stay still there and instead proceeded to climb high up in the tree and sorta hide in the shadow.

To at least get any sort of shot of how different it looked when wet, I snapped this shot of it using my phone. Compare how it looks here to this shot: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52917346784/

Using the teleconverter on the 180 mm lens (changing the focal length to 360mm) plus having the tripod at maximum height, I managed this shot of it when it finally stopped high up in the tree: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52957971561/
