Winter Quarters in Gold - _TNY_2123

Back in late September, I was helping my mom close up her summer house in Värmdö, Sweden for winter.

When she picked up a small water barrel, we discovered there was someone who had already claimed it. A pale tussock moth caterpillar (Calliteara pudibunda)

- one of the more spectacular caterpillars in Sweden in my opinion.

I of course took a couple of shots of it, like here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52617390171/ and here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52421183249/ and mom took a photo of me photographing it here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52421247963/

Last weekend, we were there again, opening up after the winter and lo and behold, the caterpillar had made a golden cocoon inside the barrel and hibernated through the cold month in there!

It will hatch sometime during spring (during daytime), but I doubt I will have the fortune of seing it emerge.
