Robberflies (Asilidae) are typically quite confident and not as easily scared as other flies - perhaps because they know they are extremely adept fliers, really only second to dragonflies.
This one, a kite-tailed robberfly (Tolmerus atricapillus) managed to show quite a lot of attitude with its head cocked like that on the leaf of a elephant-eared saxifrage (Bergenia cordifolia) by the garden pond.
