A Boy Named Julia, Pt. 3 - _TNY_1346

In my opinion a truly gorgeous butterfly with elongated wings. It's a male Julia Heliconian (Dryas iulia), sometimes known as the flame or the flambeau.

I found it sitting (standing?) completely still on a twig on the ground at the Haga Ocean butterfly house in Solna, Sweden, when visiting with my son on his autumn holliday.

That low down, the light wasn't very bright but since this was shot on tripod (w/ a wired remote shutter) and Mr. Julia was completely still, I was able to use a very long exposure time to allow for an acceptable ISO and depth of field.

Normally, I dare go as low as 1/6s or 1/4s exposure time, but here I tried with 1.5 seconds - and it worked wonderfully!

After that, I went more extreme and set it to 4 seconds - which you can see in part 1 here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52477394773/

Part 2 (also at 1.5s) here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52500024315/
