Narrow Stripes - _TNY_4875

Looking quickly at this small black and white jumping spider, it is easy to assume it is a zebra spider (Salticus scenicus), one of the - if not the most - common jumper species in Sweden.

A closer look however, reaveals this to instead be the related narrow-banded zebra spider (Salticus cingulatus).

In Swedish, this one was known as the"stamhoppspindel", which translates into "[tree]trunk jumping spider", but there was a name revision in 2022 where they updated the names to better reflect the zebra-ness of their appearance. This one became "stamzebraspindel", while S. scenicus went from sebraspindel (yes, with an "s") to "murzebraspindel" (wall zebra spider) and the third species, S. zebraneus, which used to be "barkhoppspindel" (bark jumping spider) became "dvärgzebraspindel" meaning "dwarf zebra spider".

For a second shot of this S. cingulatus, have a look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51591620152/

For a good shot of S. scenicus, go here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51945977133/

For a shot of a S. zebraneus, I'm afraid you'll have to wait as I haven't had the good fortune of coming across one yet.
