Best Bug, On Throne - _TNY_9388

The European wool carder bee (Anthidium manicatum) is one of my absolute favourite bugs and I have an entire album with shots of them here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/albums/72157667862870066

This one is a female and it's one of the quite few times that I managed to shoot them using the MP-E65mm lens.

The maximum distance it can focus at is just 101mm / 4" so you have to get in close which more often than not scare the subject away. This particular shot was done at 2.2:1 mgnification which means that the front glass of the lens was no more than 60 mm / 3.36" from the bee.

The pretty flower it is sitting on is a house leek (Sempervivum tectorum) and I think it makes for a nice little throne for my favourite.
