A Pretty Pest, Pt. 2 - _TNY_4115

The very beautiful bird-cherry ermine (Yponomeuta evonymella) might look innocent, but this is in fact a not very liked species in gardens.

The caterpillars live communally on bird-cherry (Prunus padus) and feed on it pretty unhindered as they create a web-like nest which if there are lots of caterpillars can cover entire trees in their webs.

Nevertheless, the adults are very pretty, especially on a pretty flower like this great burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis) which makes for a great contrast.
