Pine Smells Sexy Apparently - _TNY_9651

Back in late July, I helped my mom cut down a couple of large branches on a pine which were hanging a bit too near the ground at her summer house.

We proceeded to immediately cut and chop them up into firewood and put them in the wood storage underneath the stair up to the front door.

A little while late I noticed something moving on the water surface in the rain barrel right next to the firewood and it turned out to be a Spondylis buprestoides longhorn beetle - a first for me. I took some shots of it here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52246969777/

The next day I came across another one of these and managed this photo which argubly turned out better.

Later that day I found yet another one - in the same water barrel - and at first it felt weird, but reading up on them I realized that they lay their eggs in freshly felled pine tree. I am convinced the beetles smelled the pine we chopped up and came looking and then happened to get stuck in the water barrel.

Either way, those are some impressive choppers it is wielding, right?
