Unicorn - _TNY_1008

Every autumn/fall, we have to trim the hawthorn hedge on the northern side of the garden. It takes a while and we usually end up with a bunch of red scratches on ourselves from those massive thorns.

I often discover some cool bugs hiding in the foliage and this year, I came across this caterpillar which will become a moth known as the grey dagger (Acronicta psi).

As with many moths, the caterpillar is very cool-looking with lots of colour and hair while the adult is a rather grey and drab-looking moth.

I have no idea what function that black brush of hair forming a horn on its back does, but I can't see it not having a function - it looks too specific for that.
