Wings Up - _TNY_6759
The mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), also known as the Camberwell beauty in the UK, hibernates as an adult and this one was sunning itself on a gravel road in Åva-Stensjödal in Tyresta National Park in mid April (which can be plenty cold up here in Sweden).
The name mourning cloak has its origin in something called an caparison. This is a dark piece of cloth with a pale yellow or white border which is put on a military horse at the rider's funeral and the horse is leading the funeral procession.
I have another shot of this one - but with the wings raised and showing the dorsal side here if you want: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52306345780/
