Drying Up, Pt. 2 - _TNY_1376
The blue background here is a plastic water barrel in my mother-in-law's garden. This wasp had fallen into the water and couldn't get up so I held down a leaf and let it climb up in exchange for a couple of shots.
I can't really decide which exact species this is, but it appears to be one of the long-cheeked species, ie the genus Dolichovespula. There are three species which I think it could be, but this ends at Dolichovespula sp.
Also in this particular shot, I somehow managed to time how it is extending the inner mouth parts quite a lot. Compare it to how it looks in pt 1 here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51908026584/
