The Sniper - _TNY_9071

Snipeflies are called so because they like to sit still, preferably high up, and when they spot a potential prey they take off and move in for the kill.

 

This one is a female marsh snipefly (Rhagio tringarius) though there is a slim chance it is a small fleck-winged snipefly (Rhagio lineola) instead.

 

Ideally I would have managed a shot more from the top to see the dark markings on the wings, but this one had taken position on a leaf a little bit in on the branch with some other leaves above it. Moving them would in all likelyhood have led to it taking off.

 

Also, doesn't it look like it's got a nice chinstrap beard here?
