This Blue is a Red - _TNY_8247
If you just look at this Hamadryas ampphinome from this angle and try to imagine a good English name, what would it be?
Something to do with all those gorgeous blue swirls? Or the two distinct white bands? No?
How about "red cracker"? Because that's what it's called. The reason is the underside of the wings which is mostly red (a little is showing in the edge between the front and hind wings here), but I saw several of these at my visit to the Haga Ocean butterfly house in Solna, Sweden, and none of them showed me even a hint of the undersides.
Also, do zoom in on the abdomen of this one - doesn't that hair look extremely soft and smooth?
